Description

Original provider: Dr. S.Z. El-Sayed Dataset credits: Antarctic Environmental Data Centre, British Antarctic Survey Abstract: The Biological Investigations of Marine Antarctic Systems and Stocks (BIOMASS) Programme was established in the late 1970's for the study of the Antarctic marine ecosystem and its living resources (Thorley, online resource). Data were collected during 3 major field experiments between 1981 and 1985, divided into two periods: First International BIOMASS Experiment (FIBEX) in 1980-1981, and the Second International BIOMASS Experiment (SIBEX) in 1983-1985. In total 34 cruises were carried out (El-Sayed, online resource), of which 21 cruises were gathered in this data set. This data set provides sea-bird observation collected in the cruises. Reference For full citation information, see [Cross Reference]. Purpose: The main objective of BIOMASS was to gain a deeper understanding of the structure and dynamic functioning of the Antarctic marine ecosystem as a basis for the future management of potential living resources (El-Sayed, online resource), with the particular focus on krill. Specifically, FIBEX was aimed at carrying out a quasi-synoptic survey over a wide area the South Atlantic, Indian Ocean and Pacific sectors of the Southern Ocean. SIBEX was designed to produce a temporal sequence of observations focused on much smaller areas of the Bransfield Strait and Prydz Bay regions (Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure, online resource). Sea-birds data were collected as supporting data to krill. For further detail, you are referred to El-Sayed (1994). Reference For full citation information, see [Cross Reference]. Supplemental information: [2020-09-30] The following invalid species names were corrected according to the Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS). Diomedea bulleri (174522) => Thalassarche bulleri (563380) Chinstrap Penguin: Pygoscelis antarctica (174446) => Pygoscelis antarcticus (723249) Grey-headed Albatross: Diomedea chrysostoma (174523) => Thalassarche chrysostoma (563381) Pterodroma brevirostris (174585) => Aphrodroma brevirostris (723250) Rockhopper Penguin: Eudyptes crestatus (174453) => Eudyptes chrysocome (559996) Shy Albatross: Diomedea cauta (174519) => Thalassarche cauta (554451) South Polar Skua: Catharacta maccormicki (176801) => Stercorarius maccormicki (660062) Yellow-nosed Albatross: Diomedea chlororhynchos (174521) => Thalassarche chlororhynchos (554452) Phalacrocorax atriceps (174734) => Leucocarbo atriceps (824003) Phalacrocorax olivaceus (174722) => Phalacrocorax brasilianus brasilianus (824220) Chionis alba (176787) => Chionis albus (824031) Phalacrocorax albiventer (174730) => Leucocarbo albiventer (824004) When interested in a certain cruise, make a query for 'CRUISE' field.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 16,708 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
