Description

Original provider: NOAA Southwest Fisheries Science Center (SWFSC) Dataset credits: Marine Mammal and Turtle Division, Southwest Fisheries Science Center, NMFS, NOAA Abstract: This 2006 eastern tropical Pacific cetacean line-transect survey was part of the Stenella Abundance Research Project (STAR), a multi-year cetacean and ecosystem assessment study designed to assess the status of dolphin stocks which have been taken as incidental catch by the yellowfin tuna purse-seine fishery in the Eastern Tropical Pacific. This survey was conducted by the NOAA Southwest Fisheries Science Center aboard NOAA ships David Starr Jordan and McArthur II for a combined total of approximately 22,000 kilometers surveyed from late July to early December 2006. This dataset provides the time-date and geographical coordinates, by species/stock, of all cetaceans detected during the survey, as well as the daily and intra-daily start and end points of the line-transect survey by the NOAA Ship McArthur II. Purpose: The primary purpose of the survey was to collect information necessary to estimate abundance of dolphin stocks in the eastern tropical Pacific that are taken as bycatch in the yellowfin tuna purse seine fishery. Supplemental information: This dataset is supplemental to the following datasets: SWFSC Marine Mammal Survey, MOPS 1986, Cruise 989 SWFSC Marine Mammal Survey, MOPS 1986, Cruise 990 SWFSC Marine Mammal Survey, MOPS 1987, Cruise 1080 SWFSC Marine Mammal Survey, MOPS 1987, Cruise 1081 SWFSC Marine Mammal Survey, MOPS 1988, Cruise 1164 SWFSC Marine Mammal Survey, MOPS 1988, Cruise 1165 SWFSC Marine Mammal Survey, MOPS 1989, Cruise 1267 SWFSC Marine Mammal Survey, MOPS 1989, Cruise 1268 SWFSC Marine Mammal Survey, MOPS 1990, Cruise 1369 SWFSC Marine Mammal Survey, MOPS 1990, Cruise 1370 SWFSC Marine Mammal Survey, STAR 1998, Cruise 1610 SWFSC Marine Mammal Survey, STAR 1998, Cruise 1611 SWFSC Marine Mammal Survey, STAR 1998, Cruise 1612 SWFSC Marine Mammal Survey, STAR 1999, Cruise 1613 SWFSC Marine Mammal Survey, STAR 1999, Cruise 1614 SWFSC Marine Mammal Survey, STAR 2000, Cruise 1615 SWFSC Marine Mammal Survey, STAR 2000, Cruise 1616 SWFSC Marine Mammal Survey, STAR 2003, Cruise 1623 SWFSC Marine Mammal Survey, STAR 2003, Cruise 1624 SWFSC Marine Mammal Survey, STAR 2006, Cruise 1630 SWFSC Marine Mammal Survey, STAR-LITE 2007, Cruise 1634

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 843 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
